Stripmall Architecture and Return to Mono

On Friday night, my original plan was just to go to my first static trapeze class and then go home for the night. Instead, I decided to Do All The Things because Stripmall Architecture (with Unwoman on cello) and Return to Mono were performing at the Rickshaw Stop. So, I shot my first show of the year. Here’s some of my favorite photos from the night. The full set follows below.

Halou: Wiser, at Cafe du Nord

When Halou ended, Rebecca and Ryan Coseboom formed Stripmall Architecture. On Saturday night, Stripmall Architecture celebrated the 10th anniversary of Halou’s Wiser by performing the entirety of the album at Cafe du Nord.

Excuses for Skipping opened the night. They were awesome.

Tremor Low was next.

Then, fog drifted across the stage, lit by incandescent bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Rebecca and Ryan Coseboom took the stage, joined by Patrick Harte on drums, Unwoman (Erica Mulkey) on cello, Maxine Nemerovski on Violin, and Greg Kehret on bass. They played Wiser in its entirety, Rebecca’s voice transporting me back to Vienna where I often listened to Halou to remind me of home.

Stripmall Architecture

Stripmall Architecture came to my new studio space for a shoot at the end of April. The photos have been online for a few weeks, but life got full of things. Now I’m finally writing about it.

We did some simple photos against a white backdrop, with the idea that the white areas can be filled with drawings. For the rest of the photos, we used a projector as the light source. We used a drawing by Jody Pham (she did the cover of their new album) and a pattern of dots. It also did great things for silhouettes and backlighting. I’m thoroughly convinced that a projector needs to be part of the permanent photo studio setup.

Looking through the photographs at the end of this, I see accidental beautiful things that can feed future projects. I feel incredibly fortunate to work with such wonderful collaborators.

the tendency of transit systems to become completely disfunctional on weekends is disrespectful to humans that live outside of their jobs.
