Obscura Day – Secrets of Alcatraz

Goths on a boat!

On April 9th, as part of Obscura Day, presented by Atlas Obscura, Slim and I were invited to join Death Guild in a behind-the-scenes tour of Alcatraz (thanks Annetta!). In my five years living in the Bay Area, this was my first trip to Alcatraz.

We took the ferry over half an hour before the rest of the group. When the next ferry arrived, we could see the line of our friends at the front, all dressed in black with the occasional bit of red hair. With the group assembled, we met our tour guide. She was tiny and super enthusiastic. She led us all around the island, taking us past “off limit” signs and into parts of the island that most people don’t get to see. We saw the old apartments of the guards and their families and the industry building. We put on hard hats to explore the space underneath the prison.

Also, check out Neil Girling’s photos from Obscura Day.

the tendency of transit systems to become completely disfunctional on weekends is disrespectful to humans that live outside of their jobs.
