April ended with a trip to the Lost Horizon Night Market. The event originated in NYC and has since happened twice in the Bay Area. This time, the trucks were parked in an industrial area of West Oakland. Each truck was something different.
There was storytelling and music in the Lost Municipal Library of Brigadoon. I picked out a book from the shelf. The librarian gave me a library card and checked out the book for me. It’s due in exactly 100 years.
There was a saloon with the name of “The Best Little Box Truck in West Oakland” with a bar and a human powered Bucking Bunny. I fell off after only a few seconds. Later in the night, we returned with the Queen of Hearts. Here’s a photo of her riding the bunny.
A large crowd gathered around the Smash Truck. Each participant was given safety gear, a choice of hammer, and 10 seconds to smash things in the truck. They gave me a large mirror in addition to the half-destroyed objects already in there. Smashing the mirror and a glass bottle was particularly satisfying. Slim went next and did some severe damage to the toy horse.
Outside, I was given a rose frozen with liquid nitrogen to smash on a mirror. Broken petals littered the surface of the mirror.
The agents outside of the Mission Impossible Truck told us to find the Man in the Mask to get our mission. He instructed us to take an uncatalogued dream from the Dream Library.
This task got us thrown into the prison truck. We made our escape and rushed into the Mission Impossible truck. We crawled through, attempting to avoid the lasers to get the cupcake at the end.
In another truck, Slim got pied.
We joined the Mad Hatter, Alice, the March Hare, the Queen of Hearts and others at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. There was singing and smashing of cups. Alice threw sugar to anyone who wished for some.
At the Dream Library, I contributed a nightmare to the shelf and read a few sweet dreams.
